Reduced time to degree equals faster entry into workforce

Green Bay, WI – The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay is the first public university in the state to offer students the choice of a reduced credit bachelor’s degree. Beginning this Fall, students interested in the bachelor’s degree in Computer Science have the option to finish their undergraduate degree in less than four years.

The program is designed for all students including transfer students or those who are currently working and want to upskill. “This option for students provides a streamlined path to workforce readiness, offering entry into the workforce within a shorter amount of time,” said Kate Burns, provost and vice chancellor for Academic Affairs. “Students can take the full 120-credit computer science program, or the 100-credit reduced credit route. Either way, students have access to multiple paths and the flexibility to design a program that best fits their future goals.”

Given the high demand for technology-related careers throughout the region, many computer science majors are offered employment opportunities before completing their four-year degree. Based on UW-Green Bay First Destination data, students are hired for roles like computer programmer, software developer or system analyst within the region.

The reduced-credit computer science option is particularly attractive to individuals who already hold an associate degree and are employed in the region, as it provides a faster pathway to degree completion. In a rapidly evolving field such as computer science, this accelerated option aligns with both student goals and workforce needs by enabling learners to advance their education efficiently while meeting the growing demand for skilled professionals.
