(WAUKESHA, Wis.) – This summer, Waukesha County Parks is taking a little sass to the trails. The parks department is launching a new “Leave No Trace” campaign to encourage responsible park use and protect our local natural spaces.
The campaign, running June through September, focuses on three simple rules: keep dogs on leashes and clean up after them, stay on marked trails, and dispose of your trash (including pet waste). While these tips may seem basic, the new campaign delivers them in a fun, relatable way that prompts self-reflection without lecturing, because research shows a little humor goes a long way in inspiring better behavior.
“Nature doesn’t need another lecture – it needs partners,” said Emily Helm, Waukesha County Parks Natural Resource Program Coordinator. “Our parks are amazing, and most visitors respect them. But a gentle nudge can make a big difference.”
What to Expect
Friendly Reminder Fridays: A weekly social media series on Facebook and Instagram with fun, relatable messages like “Good dogs wear leashes. Great owners use them.” or “You’re not a deer. Please use the trail.”
Seasonal Onsite Signage: Eye-catching signs at parks with messages like “Don’t be the reason we need more signs: Leash your dog. Dispose of trash. Stay on trail.”
County Newsletter Features: Updates from June through September to highlight the campaign and provide quick tips to park-goers.
Ultimately, the goal is simple: keep Waukesha County Parks clean, safe, and enjoyable for everyone – humans and wildlife alike. For more information, follow Waukesha County Parks on Facebook or Instagram.
