Hi, I’m Representative Paul Tittl and I represent the 25 th Assembly District. I wanted to take some time to talk to you about the proposed sandhill crane hunting season, AB-117 and Senate Bill 112.
The proposal establishes a regulated sandhill crane hunting program in Wisconsin while also providing new support for farmers who experience crop damage from cranes. The bill allows the Department of Natural Resources to issue a limited number of hunting permits, set seasons and zones, and require a special hunter education course. These measures ensure hunting is done safely, responsibly, and in a way that protects other bird species, including whooping cranes. Revenue from permit fees is directed toward both crane conservation efforts and wildlife damage programs.
The bill strikes a balance between conservation, agriculture, and outdoor recreation. By investing in habitat management, crop protection, and education the bill strengthens Wisconsin’s rural economy and preserves its natural resources for future generations.
U.S. Fish and Wildlife told us we need at least 30,000 cranes to have a hunt, there are currently 112,000 cranes in Wisconsin and the current population count is considered to be an undercount. This proposal is common sense, please contact your state representative and senator and urge them to support AB-117 and SB-112
Thank you and God Bless!
