La Crosse, WI — On September 7, the Coulee Region will once again join our nation in observing Labor Day, a holiday created to praise those who work hard to make life better for all of America. Labor Day is more than just a holiday, it represents a celebration of the victories of workers in their fight for fair wages, decent working conditions, and recognition on the job.

Labor Day in La Crosse kicks off with a family-friendly parade that spans 10-12 blocks. The parade will begin at 10 a.m. at the corner of Gillette and Kane Streets on the north side of La Crosse.After the parade, the festivities move to the Loggers’ Concessions Area in Copeland Park, with free games for kids (a “fishpond” and piles of sawdust with coins hidden in them). Adults can participate in bingo, raffles, and plentiful comradery opportunities. Loggers’ Concessions staff will offer soda, beer, brats, hot dogs, burgers, and snacks for purchase.

This year’s parade marshal is Tim Padesky. Tim started T.D. Padesky Electric in 1982 after working for several area electrical contractors. Being an electrician was his legacy as his father; Don was a long-time IBEW member. Tim is a master electrician and a Licensed Electrical Designer. During his entire career, both as a worker and as a contractor, Tim maintained his membership in IBEW 14 and has championed unionized work by creating thousands of family supporting jobs during his career. Tim is married to Tara Johnson, former La Crosse County Board Chair and current member of the Wisconsin Assembly representing the 96th District.

Working class Americans are the backbone of this country. They are the first responders we rely on in times of need; the builders, communication workers, and other trades workers who make sure our homes, businesses, and bridges are safe; the educators who are teaching the trailblazers of the future; the bakers and the other food workers feeding our families; the street repairers who maintain our roads and keep us moving; the health care workers who strive to maintain our well-being; the line workers keeping the lights on in America; the writers, actors and musicians that entertain us; the workers in public service who tie it all together; and so many others.

The Western Wisconsin AFL-CIO hosts this annual Labor Day event to provide a family-friendly parade and festival experience for area residents while celebrating and honoring all working people in the Coulee region.

The change in the location of the post-parade festivity location is due to construction at the north end of Copeland Park.
