The Wisconsin Education Association Council, representing public school educators in the state, welcomes the election of Judge Chris Taylor to the Wisconsin Supreme Court. In earning WEAC’s recommendation in January, WEAC’s educator-members cited Taylor’s strong record of protecting fairness and impartiality and appreciating the importance of public education.
The following statement can be attributed to WEAC President and teacher Peggy Wirtz-Olsen.
“With Justice-elect Taylor’s victory last night, Wisconsin should be able to look forward to a pro-public education majority on the court for at least 10 years. With chaos, cruelty and extremism in charge at the federal level, educators know our students need the best, most committed leadership in Wisconsin. Justice-elect Taylor brings that commitment and she earned this election victory by demonstrating her ability to be impartial, uphold the Constitution and keep our communities and schools safe.
“Tuesday night’s victories should inspire all of us, as the public school educators who work with students every day, to be even more visible and demand more from elected officials. We need to raise our voices for policies to solve staffing shortages and address the state funding crisis that forces communities to referendum every year just to keep the schoolhouse doors open. The votes show Wisconsin rejected the voucher lobby in favor of educators, so all students – no exceptions – have the opportunity to learn without limits.”
