MADISON, WI — Today, the Wisconsin Legislative Transgender Parent & Nonbinary Advocacy Caucus (TPANAC) expressed deep disappointment following the United States Supreme Court’s decision to uphold state laws that prohibit transgender girls from participating on girls school sports teams. The ruling, in consolidating cases from Idaho and West Virginia, will have far-reaching implications for transgender youth across the country and strengthens similar ban laws already enacted in over 25 states.

For any youth, sports have never been just about winning games. They are about belonging, building confidence, forming friendships, learning teamwork, and being part of a community. Today’s decision sends a painful message to young people who simply want the same opportunities as their classmates.

As members of TPANAC, many of us know personally what it means to love, support, and advocate for transgender and nonbinary children. We have witnessed their courage in the face of relentless political attacks, and we have seen the harm caused when elected officials choose fear over facts and exclusion over inclusion.

“Today’s ruling is undoubtedly a setback, but it is not the end of the fight for equality,” the Caucus stated. “Throughout our nation’s history, progress toward civil rights has often required perseverance in the face of difficult court decisions. We remain committed to advancing policies that protect transgender and nonbinary Wisconsinites from discrimination and ensure every individual is treated with dignity and respect”

We also recognize the emotional toll this decision may have on transgender youth and their families. To every transgender young person in Wisconsin: You are not alone. You are seen. You are valued. You deserve to be loved exactly as you are, and there are countless people across this state who will continue fighting alongside you. No court decision can diminish the dignity, humanity, or worth of transgender people. We remain steadfast in our belief every young person deserves the opportunity to participate in school activities in an environment that is safe, welcoming and free from discrimination.
