Milwaukee, WI. March 24, 2026 — The Wisconsin Muslim Civic Alliance (WMCA) applauds Governor Tony Evers for vetoing AB 672, a dangerous piece of legislation that threatened to undermine fundamental constitutional rights and chill free speech across Wisconsin.
AB 672 raised serious concerns among civil rights organizations, advocates, and community leaders for its potential to expand surveillance, suppress dissent, and target communities engaged in lawful protest and advocacy.
“Governor Evers made the right decision in standing up for the Constitution and protecting the rights of all Wisconsinites,” said Fauzia Qureshi, Executive Director of WMCA. “At a time when communities across the country are facing increased efforts to silence dissent, this veto sends a clear message that Wisconsin will not compromise on civil liberties or free expression.”
WMCA, alongside a broad coalition of partners, actively advocated against AB 672, highlighting its harmful implications for community safety, civic engagement, and democratic participation.
“This bill would have created a chilling effect on communities already navigating fear and uncertainty,” said Fatima Malik, policy lead at WMCA. “Protecting public safety should never come at the expense of constitutional freedoms. We are grateful to Governor Evers for recognizing the real impact this legislation would have had on marginalized communities.”
WMCA also urges Governor Evers to veto another dangerous bill currently on his desk, AB 446 / SB 445. Similar to AB 672, this legislation risks chilling free political speech and undermining the ability of communities to advocate, organize, and speak out on critical issues.
“We call on the Governor to once again stand firmly on the side of the Constitution and reject efforts that threaten free expression,” added Qureshi.
The veto represents a critical victory for advocates working to ensure that Wisconsin remains a state where individuals can speak, organize, and advocate without fear of retaliation or surveillance.
WMCA remains committed to advancing policies that protect civil rights, promote equity, and strengthen democratic participation for all communities across Wisconsin.
