One student from each technical college chosen to represent WTCS

MADISON – The Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS) celebrated its 2026 class of Student Ambassadors at a special banquet held last night in Wisconsin Dells. The annual event recognizes outstanding students from across the state who exemplify leadership, perseverance and academic excellence while preparing for in-demand careers.

WTCS provides comprehensive education and workforce training that empowers students and employers to thrive amid innovation and workplace transformation, helping drive economic vitality in communities throughout Wisconsin.

Each year, one student from each of Wisconsin’s 16 technical colleges is selected to serve as a WTCS Student Ambassador, representing the System and its students statewide. Following a day and a half of team-building and leadership development activities, this year’s ambassadors were honored at a banquet attended by family members, college and System leaders, legislators and other invited guests. During the event, students received an award and scholarship and shared powerful stories of determination, resilience and personal success.

Throughout the celebration, a common theme emerged: technical college graduates develop not only strong technical skills, but also the critical thinking, creativity and teamwork abilities that allow them to balance career success, family responsibilities and community leadership. Following the banquet, the students will officially serve as WTCS Student Ambassadors for one year, and, unofficially, for a lifetime.

WTCS President Layla Merrifield addressed the students during the program, commending them for their achievements and leadership potential.

“Your presence here is a testament to your hard work, commitment and genuine desire to lead within your chosen fields,” Merrifield said. “You didn’t arrive here by chance. You earned your place by demonstrating exceptional character, dedication and initiative. You represent Wisconsin’s future workforce and future leaders, and we are incredibly proud of you and the effort that brought you here. This experience is about continuing to grow that leadership potential.”

State Sen. Jesse James (R–23rd District) also attended the event and reflected on his own experience as Chippewa Valley Technical College’s WTCS Student Ambassador during the 2000–2001 academic year. Sen. James’ district includes portions of four technical college districts.

The Student Ambassador Banquet and leadership development program was made possible through the continued support of Baird Public Finance, which has served as the program’s sole sponsor for 41 years. Public Finance Banker Debby Brunett addressed the students and guests, emphasizing Baird’s long-standing commitment to education, leadership development and investing in Wisconsin’s future workforce.
