MADISON, Wis. — Today, new reporting from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel revealed election denier Congressman Tom Tiffany confirmed Trump’s Department of Justice is deploying thousands of federal monitors in several states including Wisconsin, calling it “good news.” This comes two days after FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed agents known as election crime coordinators would be stationed at all FBI field offices.

“Congressman Tom Tiffany is welcoming Trump’s election interference in the midterms with open arms,” said Democratic Party of Wisconsin spokesperson Emily Stuckey. “Despite what election-denier Tom Tiffany says, this is not good news. This is one more dangerous step to undermine democracy in Wisconsin and we know exactly why — Trump wants a crony in office when it’s time to certify the 2028 presidential elections who is willing to do whatever Trump wants.”

  • Federal authorities will again be on the ground in Wisconsin for the upcoming midterm election, U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany, the Republican candidate for governor, said Thursday.
  • At a campaign event Sept. 17 at the Pioneer Keg in Dodge County, Tiffany told supporters that the U.S. Department of Justice is sending officials to Wisconsin during the November election.
  • “And by the way, good news, good news, the federal Department of Justice is coming to Wisconsin for this election to make sure that we have election integrity,” he said when asked about elections.
  • When asked for more information about Tiffany’s comments, a campaign spokeswoman said 1,000 federal monitors would be deployed for the midterms, and shared an Aug. 18 article from CBS News on the plan. According to the story, federal authorities have long deployed monitors during elections.
  • The number has increased from under 300 in the 2022 midterm to 1,000 announced for this election, according to CBS News.
  • The report did not include any information specifically about Wisconsin, or about how many monitors would be present in the state on Nov. 3.
  • Tiffany’s comments came two days after FBI Director Kash Patel suggested during a hearing of the Senate Judiciary Committee that he may be open to sending federal authorities to polling places but was vague and did not provide details.
  • Patel initially refused to answer questions about whether he had plans to dispatch officials to states that have elections on Nov. 3. But when pressed by Democratic Vermont Sen. Peter Welch, Patel said agents known as election crime coordinators would be stationed at all FBI field offices.
  • “Election integrity is of paramount importance. This FBI is not going to shy away from that effort,” he said.
  • Armed federal officers or military personnel are not allowed to be deployed to polling places, under federal and state laws, according to the Brennan Center.
  • President Donald Trump has repeatedly cast doubt on the results of the 2020 election in Wisconsin. Tiffany objected to certifying the 2020 presidential election results in two states and said he would have objected to the results in Wisconsin,which showed former Democratic President Joe Biden won, but the Jan. 6, 2021 U.S. Capitol insurrection disrupted voting on the matter.
  • Federal authorities have scrutinized Wisconsin elections in recent months, including FBI agents interviewing a number of state and local election workers.
