MADISON, Wis. — Senator Tammy Baldwin has been a driving force in holding the Trump administration accountable for their illegal war in Iran. Since the war began, Senator Baldwin has forced multiple votes on War Powers Resolutions as the war has claimed the lives of 13 American soldiers, sent fuel and fertilizer prices soaring, and has cost taxpayers already facing economic turmoil billions of dollars.

MS NOW: Sen. Baldwin: We’ve gone ‘backwards, not forward’ with Trump’s war of choice in Iran
“The American people don’t support this war, and they are paying for it. Whether it’s the loss of life of our service members, the many who are injured, whether it is the price of gas. My farmers are struggling so mightily right now because their fertilizer prices have skyrocketed. It’s planting season, and most of them can’t afford all the fertilizer they need to start their planting. Diesel fuel is at a record high in Wisconsin, and so the American people are paying the price for this war.”
WTMJ: Sen Baldwin and Democrats push to end U.S.-Iran war at 60-day mark
The U.S.-Iran military conflict has reached the 60-day mark as Democratic lawmakers continue pushing to end the war, with gas prices surging past $4 a gallon — and the Pentagon placing the cost of the war at $25 billion.
The Strait of Hormuz remains under U.S. blockade as the political battle over the war intensifies in Washington.
Senator Tammy Baldwin has been among the most vocal critics, calling the war illegal.
“The President, as Commander-in-Chief, has the authority to use military force if we are under attack, or imminent threat of attack. Nothing like that was present when President Trump decided to go to war in Iran,” Baldwin said.
WKOW: Sen. Tammy Baldwin urges Congress to act to stop war with Iran
Baldwin said she has been working to get Congress to act since the war started. She said presidents have the authority to protect the nation under imminent attack but cannot unilaterally declare a war of choice without congressional authorization.
The Wisconsin senator outlined the costs of the conflict — 13 American service members have died and hundreds more have been injured.
“It’s costing over a billion dollars a day by most estimates,” Baldwin said.
She said consumers are facing higher costs at the gas pump and farmers are dealing with skyrocketing fertilizer prices as they prepare to plant crops. Those costs will soon hit grocery store checkout counters.
“The president can’t even articulate a reason that’s consistent why we are there, and the things that he has mentioned are in no better shape today, almost two months into this war, than they were before it began,” Baldwin said.
CAP TIMES: Iran War reminds Sen. Tammy Baldwin of 2002
Baldwin said she is concerned the U.S. could be heading for another long, drawn-out war in the Middle East.
“What worries me is that this becomes another open-ended, costly (war),” Baldwin said. “And when I talk about cost, I’m talking about lives as well as dollars.”

“I think this is an illegal war. It is a war of choice, and I think we should demand that it come to an end. It’s unauthorized by Congress,” Baldwin said. “I’m not going to give this president advice on how he can save face — he just needs to end it.”
SPECTRUM NEWS: ‘Disturbing lack of attention’: Senator concerned about soldiers’ care after being wounded in Iran
But Senator Tammy Baldwin, D-Wis., is raising concerns about those who have come home wounded.
“We have heard from a couple of Wisconsin soldiers who were in Kuwait during the drone strike, and after several weeks, found themselves at Fort Hood and were very concerned that, despite obvious symptoms of traumatic brain injury, they weren’t being seen by neurologists, they weren’t being seen by behavioral health and experts, and they needed care,” she said.
Baldwin said she has called the Defense Health Agency (DHA) and followed up with a letter, telling Spectrum News 1 questions need to be answered about a “very disturbing lack of attention” they were getting to traumatic brain injuries.
“Any service member who dons the uniform and fights on our behalf, I believe we owe the best and immediate health care,” Baldwin said.
WISCONSIN EXAMINER: Sen. Tammy Baldwin denounces Trump’s ‘illegal war with Iran’
In a press call Thursday, Wisconsin Sen. Tammy Baldwin called the U.S. war with Iran “yet another broken promise from this president who pledged to end foreign conflicts, not start them.”
“President Trump may have forgotten the lessons we learned in Iraq and Afghanistan, but Wisconsinites have not,” Baldwin told reporters. “They remember the cost of war started without good reasons and without a plan to get us out.”
Objecting to the fact that Congress, which has the power to declare war, was not consulted before the Trump administration began bombing, Baldwin added, “This is a war of choice. But it shouldn’t be the president’s choice.”
The Trump administration, she said, has offered multiple, conflicting reasons for starting the war, which as of Thursday had so far claimed the lives of seven U.S. service members and injured 140 others, as well as leading to the deaths of more than 1,000 civilians, including 175 students and teachers at a girls’ school.
“All signs point to this president getting us into this war haphazardly, and it’s deeply concerning because it’s Wisconsinites who are going to pay the price,” Baldwin said. “Wisconsinites need some answers. They should know why this administration is spending billions of dollars on a war with Iran instead of investing in our schools or lowering the cost of groceries, health care or rent.”
PBS WISCONSIN: US Sen. Tammy Baldwin on the war with Iran and its mission
“Look, first of all, Americans have been clear. They do not want another forever war in the Middle East. They want Congress and this president to be focused on needs at home, addressing the high cost of things like groceries, housing, child care, and health care. And this president, in fact, promised that he would bring foreign wars to an end, not start them. Let me be very clear. This is a war of choice. The U.S. and U.S. interests were not under attack, nor were we under imminent threat of attack. And because of that, this is a war of choice. And the president needed to go to Congress to get authorization. It is an illegal war because of his failure to do that. I voted to bring this to an end and would note, though, that it is the proponents of this war who bear the burden of getting congressional authorization for it, and they have failed to do that. The Constitution makes it the responsibility of Congress, who represent the people to declare war and that has not happened. And instead, we are spending billions of dollars each day in this war, and we’re losing the lives of our troops, including six who have lost their lives in this conflict so far.”
