Madison – Today, Assembly Bill (AB) 28, authored by Representative Mark Born (R – Beaver Dam) and Senator Howard Marklein (R – Spring Green) was signed into law as 2023 Wisconsin Act 4. Act 4 will give county jailers access to protective status benefits including an earlier retirement age and duty disability insurance.
“This legislation reflects a greater appreciation for the challenges county jailers face on a daily basis and the critical role they play in keeping our jails safe,” said Rep. Born. “I am proud to have worked alongside the Badger State Sheriff’s Association, Wisconsin Sheriffs and Deputy Sheriffs Association and the Wisconsin Counties Association to craft this bipartisan piece of legislation.”
AB 28 passed both the Assembly and Senate with unanimous support earlier this year.
“Thank you to all those who have worked on this legislative concept since it was first introduced decades ago,” added Rep. Born. “I am honored to have played a role in getting this bill across the finish line so our county jailers who sacrifice so much for our communities are able to receive the benefits of protective status.”
