MADISON – Today, Representative Alex Joers (D-Middleton) joined Governor Tony Evers as he signed Wisconsin Act 72 into law. Previously Senate Bill 267, Act 72 creates a grant program for recovery high schools that assist students in recovery from a substance abuse disorder. Representative Joers released the following statement:
“There is nothing more important than investing in our next generation. We must provide resources to our students and their families as they heal and prepare for the future. This legislation marks a significant step in promoting the overall recovery of our youth across Wisconsin, and I am honored to have been part of the process to move it forward.
“I am grateful for the many advocates that championed this effort, specifically the leadership and supporters of Horizon High School. Horizon, which is currently located in the 79th Assembly District, is currently the only recovery high school in the state of Wisconsin. The Horizon team and community of supporters have been dedicated to helping students thrive over the past 19 years. Their leadership in advocating for this legislation exemplifies their commitment to lifting up others. This bill offers the possibility for students across the state to benefit from programs similar to the work done at Horizon.
“We need to ensure that students across Wisconsin are given the best opportunity to succeed. Providing options like recovery schools to the students who need it truly helps save lives. There is more work to be done, but I am glad to have worked to get this bill over the finish line.”
