(MILWAUKEE, Wis) – State Representative Margaret Arney issued the following statement in response to the May 11th fire at the apartment building on Highland and 27th St in the Concordia neighborhood:
I am heartbroken by the tragic fire that took the lives of five of our neighbors, displaced many residents, and affected even more people in our community. My thoughts are with the families and loved ones affected by this unimaginable loss.
I have had preliminary discussions with my colleagues to address some of the issues that may have exacerbated the fire, such as updating building codes to address sprinkler requirements. Wisconsinites deserve to be safe in their own homes. I am committed to working collaboratively with anyone, no matter their political party or ideology, to make older apartments safer and work to prevent these kinds of tragedies in the future.
We must also support those affected, and the community at large. The American Red Cross has set up a reception center at Holler Park at 5151 S 6th St. to assist those affected by the fire. Milwaukee County also provides resources for emergencies, such as shelters and meal programs. Let’s come together to provide comfort and aid to our neighbors during this difficult time.
