MILWAUKEE_Milwaukee businessman and philanthropist Sheldon Lubar will commemorate his 96th birthday at a dedication ceremony for the new Sheldon B. Lubar Study & Conference Room, which includes an exhibit of his life’s work, in the Golda Meir Library on UWM’s campus.
Media are invited to cover the event, which will take place 4-6 p.m. on Wednesday, May 21.
Attending the event will be UWM Chancellor Mark Mone, other university leaders, Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley, a representative from the mayor’s office, Sheldon and Marianne Lubar, members of the Lubar family and friends from the Milwaukee community.
A distinguished philanthropist, Lubar — alongside his wife, Marianne — has made transformative contributions that have benefited Wisconsin, Milwaukee and UWM. The most recent gift not only funded the renovation of a new study and conference room, but also an archive of prized professional accomplishments. That exhibit will showcase his legacy in business, public service and philanthropy, in addition to housing Lubar’s papers, artifacts and more.
The Lubars’ support for UWM began in 1979 and they’ve given nearly $22 million, benefiting the Sheldon B. Lubar College of Business, Lubar Entrepreneurship Center, Peck School of the Arts, UWM Libraries, faculty positions and over 1,000 student scholarships.
Lubar is widely regarded as one of Wisconsin’s foremost entrepreneurs, business leaders and ardent supporters of higher education. He founded Lubar & Co., a successful private investment firm, and held key economic advisory roles under Presidents Nixon, Ford and Carter. He also served as president of the Universities of Wisconsin Board of Regents and led numerous state committees and task forces.
