Today, the Wisconsin State Assembly and Senate both passed AB 257, the Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) Modernization Act, with broad bipartisan support. The legislation will improve access to health care, especially in underserved and rural communities, by allowing advanced practice registered nurses to provide care independently and to the full extent of their training, under safeguards that ensure high standards of care.

“Every Wisconsinite should have access timely, affordable, quality health care, no matter where they live,” said Rep. Lisa Subeck, D-Madison. “By empowering advanced practice nurses to do the work they are trained to do, this bill addresses workforce shortages and removes unnecessary barriers that limit access to care. It is a practical, proven step toward solving one of the most urgent health care challenges we face.”

Nearly 30 states, including neighboring Minnesota and Iowa, have adopted similar laws. The bill next heads to the governor’s desk for his signature.

“I am grateful to everyone who played a role in moving this bipartisan bill forward—Governor Evers, legislative colleagues on both sides of the aisle, and the many nurses, advocates, and stakeholders who have worked for years to make this a reality,” Rep. Subeck said. “This collaborative effort demonstrates what we can achieve when we come together to put the health and well-being of Wisconsinites first.”

Rep. Subeck represents the 79th Assembly District, and serves as Chair of the Assembly Democratic Caucus.
