MADISON, Wis. — As President Donald Trump continues to push America to the brink of war with Iran, members of the WisDems Muslim Caucus, including Fatima Malik and Wajiha Akhtar-Khaleel released the following statement:
“The President is once again breaking his promises by steering our nation toward another endless war — a war that would needlessly cost the lives of Americans, Iranians, and others across the region. Muslims, Jews, Christians — people of all faiths and backgrounds — stand to lose, while political elites gamble with human lives for personal and political gain,” said Wajiha Akhtar-Khaleel of Madison.
Said Fatima Malik, “Thankfully, Sen. Tammy Baldwin, Rep. Mark Pocan, and Rep. Gwen Moore quickly spoke out and signed onto resolutions and legislation, respectively, that reaffirms that it is Congress, and not the president, who can declare war. Their leadership is critical in upholding the checks and balances that protect our democracy from authoritarian overreach.
“Constitutionally-mandated checks and balances must be respected, and as President Abraham Lincoln said, we must preserve our government being of the people, by the people, and for the people.”
