PROFS has been pressing for a strong budget for the Universities of Wisconsin, and we are heartened that the proposal released this morning provides over $250 million in new money to UW System, and grateful to Governor Evers for advocating strongly for public higher education.
We are concerned, however, that the agreement between Republican legislative leaders and the governor includes teaching-load requirements for faculty and instructional staff, which has always been the purview of the universities themselves, not the Legislature.
So we await the details of the legislation as it is brought forward to the Joint Committee on Finance, and will continue to vigorously advocate for UW faculty members’ academic freedom.
