Madison, WI- Representative Paul Tittl (R-Manitowoc) and Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu (R- Oostburg) have secured $500,000 in the legislature’s version of 2025-2027 State Budget to restore the USS Cobia.

These dollars will provide a portion of the funding necessary for the restoration of the USS Cobia, a WWII submarine located at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum in Manitowoc.

“I am proud of Manitowoc’s rich history in shipbuilding,” said Tittl. “This investment will inform thousands of annual visitors about the bravery and sacrifice of the Greatest Generation who fought in the Pacific or labored to build world class submarines right here in Manitowoc.”

The Wisconsin Maritime Museum has been a good steward of the USS Cobia since 1970 and has worked to ensure that this piece of history is accessible for generations to come. The sub will be towed to Sturgeon Bay in September 2025 for a six-week dry dock restoration.

“The $500,000 provided in the 2025-27 state budget will fund a portion of the investment necessary to preserve the structural integrity of the USS Cobia and ensure future generations can learn about Manitowoc’s contributions to the Allied forces during World War Two,” said LeMahieu.
