MADISON, Wis. – In response to today’s Wisconsin Supreme Court ruling, Rep. Jodi Emerson (D-Eau Claire) issued the following statement:

“Today’s decision by the Wisconsin Supreme Court to strike down the 1849 abortion ban is a historic and long-overdue victory for reproductive freedom. This ruling represents the power of tireless advocacy from legal experts, reproductive rights organizers, and everyday Wisconsinites who stood up, spoke out, and refused to let our state move backward.”

“But let me be clear: while this decision is a step forward, it is not the finish line.

“Legal clarification is not the same as legal protection. Abortion access in Wisconsin remains fragile and vulnerable to political attacks. That’s why we must act now to ensure these rights are protected in law, not just in court decisions.

“In April, my Democratic colleagues and I introduced the Abortion Rights Restoration Act — legislation that would codify the right to abortion in Wisconsin law and repeal outdated, medically unnecessary restrictions. It’s time we pass this bill and make clear that reproductive freedom is not up for debate.

“We must keep fighting to safeguard privacy, bodily autonomy, and the freedom to make deeply personal health care decisions without government interference. This is about dignity, health, and human rights. Our work is far from over.”
