175 Year Old Law Overturned, Judicial Opinion Weak

Madison – Representative Joy Goeben (R-Hobart) expressed her frustration and disappointment in the ruling handed down today by the Wisconsin Supreme Court regarding the 1849 abortion law. She shared the following statement:

“Today, Wisconsinites have witnessed firsthand a prime example of judicial overreach. The voters elected our State Supreme Court Justices to follow the Constitution and uphold the laws of our state. Instead, they imposed their own, predetermined biases in upending state law that had been in place for 175 years.

“Over the past year, Republicans warned of the dangers of electing an extreme liberal court that already had preconceived determinations and opinions on the weightiest of issues, including life and death.

“I fear this is the first in long line of judicial decisions that will erode the bedrock of our State Constitution. As a conservative legislator, I pledge to continue to work to uphold the sanctity of life and ensure these laws are decided in the proper branch of government which is the legislature acting on behalf of the people of our great state,” shared Rep. Goeben.
