Both potential governor candidates – who have failed statewide elections already – have a history of being anti-choice

MADISON, Wis. —  Today, the Wisconsin Supreme Court invalidated the 1849 abortion ban Republicans have been so eager to uphold and enforce. But the fight is not over. Both Tim Michels and Eric Hovde – who are eyeing a potential 2026 Governor run after losing the races for Governor in ‘22 and Senate in ‘24, respectively – have made clear they want to take away people’s reproductive freedoms. Michels stated that the 1849 law is “an exact mirror” of his position on the matter, and Hovde infamously said he is “totally opposed to abortion.”

“In addition to being losers who think they can buy Wisconsin elections, Tim Michels and Eric Hovde have something else in common — as governor, they would bring their vehemently anti-abortion agendas to the job and try to take away essential health care from Wisconsinites,” said Democratic Party of Wisconsin Communications Director Philip Shulman. “Michels outright admitted the 1849 ban is his ‘exact position’ while Hovde has said he’s completely against abortion — they have no business legislating people’s bodies and are better served enjoying their mansions in Connecticut and California.”

  • Michels Called The 1849 Law “An Exact Mirror Of My Position” MICHELS: “The 1849 law is an exact mirror of my position, and my position is an exact mirror of the 1849 law as well, which has an exception for life of the mother.” REPORTER: “But you wouldn’t support exceptions for rape or incest?” MICHELS: “That’s Correct.” [WISN UpFront, 7/11/22]

  • Michels Called Gov. Evers & AG Kaul Not Enforcing The Unconstitutional 1849 Law “Arrogance” MICHELS: “I will not be one of these people that interprets the law for my own good. You know, and how about the arrogance of Tony Evers and Josh Kaul? They’re like, we’re not going to prosecute anybody that violates the 1849 law. Who still gave them that authority? They can’t do that. That’s the problem we have in government today. We need leaders that are constitutionalists, that are strong and will stand strong and not let anybody from outside this state bully us.” [Dane County Pints & Politics, 7/28/22

  • Hovde: “I Am Totally Opposed To Abortion” “Let me start by saying, when you get into this political arena, you never come to appreciate how low people will stoop. First of all, I am a strong believer in pro-life. I am totally opposed to abortion.” [Jerry Bader Show, 4/20/12]
