Senator Dianne Hesselbein (D-Middleton), the Democratic Senate Leader, released the following statement on the Wisconsin Supreme Court’s decision invalidating the 1849 near-total ban on abortion.

“This is a hard won and important victory. It preserves access to abortion in Wisconsin and makes clear that the archaic 1849 law to ban abortion in most every case is unenforceable.

This decision also highlights a fundamental truth: politicians have no place in the deeply personal decisions that are best made between patients and their doctors.

There is more to do. We must pass the Abortion Rights Restoration Act, which Wisconsin Democrats have introduced, to ensure reproductive rights in Wisconsin law.”
