Madison, WI – After months of listening sessions and negotiations, the Assembly voted to approve the new state spending plan for the next biennium. This budget provides increases for special education funding while also delivering significant tax relief for all Wisconsinites.

Rep. Cindi Duchow (R-Delafield) released the following statement:

“For the next biennium, the Republican Caucus prioritized fiscal responsibility in order to protect the taxpayers. I am pleased to share that this budget reduced taxes by nearly $1.5 billion, and eliminates the tax on natural gas and electricity. This budget also looks out for our seniors by creating a Retirement Income Tax Exclusion – the first $24,000 ($48,000 for joint filers) of retirement income will be excluded from the state income tax.

“Investing in our children is also a priority every budget cycle. This biennium we passed the largest investment for special education in state history. At over $500 million, local schools will see a 50% increase in state funding, and the most expensive special needs students will now be reimbursed 90% by the state.

“The Governor wanted to increase taxes to cover an $8.8 billion increase in government spending. The Joint Committee on Finance produced a budget that is responsible, and maintains necessary programs and services. I am proud to join my colleagues and vote for a budget that continues to make Wisconsin a great place to work, play, raise a family, and retire.”

Having passed the Senate, the budget now awaits the final signature from the Governor.
