Franklin, WI – Forward Latino, a non-partisan, non-profit service and advocacy organization with members and affiliates across twenty-nine states issues the following statement following U.S. District Judge Maame E. Frimpong’s decision in Pedro Vasquez Perdomo v. Kristi Noem. The judge issued two temporary restraining orders preventing immigration officials from targeting individuals for removal based on their race, language or employment and requiring the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to grant detainees access to legal counsel. The order only applies to specific counties in the state of California.
Statement by National President Darryl Morin:
“It is a somber moment when we must celebrate a court ruling that merely affirms freedoms already promised by the U.S. Constitution—freedoms that, in this case, will reach only a handful of counties in California.
When government agents wear masks and refuse to show any form of identification, when they ignore constitutional restraints, and detain immigrants, lawful residents, and citizens alike without probable cause, the issue is no longer one of immigration policy or enforcement, but tyranny.
We urge every American to call their Congressional representatives and demand an immediate halt to these unlawful actions. Ask them one simple, profound question: Would you still support these measures if the opposing party controlled the White House?
America continues to be called “the great experiment,” as there are those who question the ability of a free people, comprised of individuals from different backgrounds, faiths, and origins to live together and self-govern in a way the defends each and every person’s liberty equally. The outcome is not predetermined. The result depends on us.”
