Madison, WI – Earlier today, Gov. Tony Evers signed Senate Bill 31 (SB 31) into law as 2025 Act 18. The proposal authored by Rep. Gundrum and Sen. Cabral-Guevara allows Advanced Practice Nurse Prescribers (APNPs) and Physician Assistants (PAs) to serve as the local health officer to a local board of health. SB 31 serves as a trailer bill to 2021 Wisconsin Act 192, cleaning up statutory language. Rep. Gundrum issued the following statement regarding the enactment of SB 31:

“I’m pleased to see SB 31 cross the finish line and get signed into law. I’m confident that the framework established under the bill will directly help our state’s severe provider shortage. Many of our rural communities across the state are experiencing issues with finding adequate physicians that are willing to serve on their local board of health. By allowing APNPs and PAs to fulfill the duties of the local health officer with state agent status, we can close the gap on services offered by our local health boards, including disease tracking, immunizations, and public health programs.”
