Local 212 condemns the closure of the MATC Multicultural Affairs office and stands in solidarity with
our four colleagues assigned to that area as Student Services Specialists who have been unexpectedly
terminated.

MATC has served as an important institution for Milwaukee and Southeastern Wisconsin for
generations, representing a place of inclusion for all in the community. This action reflects neither the
mission and values of the college nor the new strategic plan goals recently celebrated during
back-to-school events.

We call on all those who care about MATC’s vital role in the community as an inclusive institution –
MATC employees, students, Local 212 members, the labor community, concerned educators and other
community partners, etc. – to come together as one voice to demand a halt to these actions by the
college, preservation and fulfillment of MATC’s commitment to serve the diverse needs of our students
and community, and appreciation of the combined 75+ years of service to the college and all that
entails by offering transfer rights to the four employees adversely affected by the closing, as per page
34 of the MATC Employee Handbook which states that, “full-time employees subject to involuntary
layoff shall be considered for reassignment”.
