Madison, WI – Today, Wisconsin Assembly and Senate Democrats introduced a bill that would prohibit firearm possession on a university or college campus except by on-duty law enforcement or military personnel. Representative Shelia Stubbs (D-Madison) released the following statement:
“Today I had the opportunity to stand alongside my Assembly and Senate Democratic colleagues for the introduction of a bill that would prohibit the possession of firearms on college and university campuses except by law enforcement or military personnel in the line of duty.
Hundreds of Wisconsinites are dying every year from firearms, whether by homicide, suicide, or in an accident. As a legislature, we must take decisive action to make our state a safer place to live and prevent future tragedies. By making our institutions of higher education firearm-free except for those carried by authorized professionals, we aim to reduce violence on our campuses and ensure that students can focus on their primary goal—learning.
As Co-Chair of the Wisconsin Coalition on Gun Safety, I will continue to support and introduce common-sense gun safety legislation that preserves the rights of responsible gun owners while protecting our communities from senseless gun violence.”
