World Suicide Prevention Day Calls Attention to Growing Crisis

MADISON, WI – Today, Rep. Deb Andraca (D-Whitefish Bay) introduced three bills to help prevent suicide, especially those involving firearms. The legislation includes the creation of an Office of Suicide Prevention, provisions allowing individuals to voluntarily prohibit themselves from purchasing a handgun, and updates to Wisconsin concealed weapons statutes to require information on suicide prevention.

“September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, today is World Suicide Prevention Day, but every day is a good day to save a life,” said Andraca. “I am proud to introduce legislation to encourage safe, responsible firearm ownership and give more people a second chance after a mental health crisis.”

For suicide attempts that don’t involve a gun, four percent result in death, but that number jumps to 90 percent when a firearm is used. In Wisconsin, suicide rates have increased by 15 percent over the last decade. The National Alliance on Mental Health (NAMI) reports that, on average, one person in the U.S. dies by suicide every 11 minutes.

“We can honor all Wisconsinites who have died by suicide by passing suicide prevention legislation this session. These are common-sense bills that can save lives, promote responsible gun ownership, and create safer homes and communities across our state.”
