Madison – Representative Shae Sortwell (R-Gibson) released the following statement regarding the circulation of additional pro-nuclear legislation:

“With energy demand on the rise as several data centers are being proposed, it is critical that we find solutions to dramatically increase our energy supply as quickly as possible. Thankfully, the nuclear renaissance is here and Wisconsin is open for business for new nuclear generation. Senator James (R-Thorp) and I have released a piece of legislation that pushes start-up cost incentives to get the ball rolling on developing nuclear facilities in Wisconsin.”

This legislation incorporates four main initiatives:

  • An annual $10,000/MW nonrefundable tax credit for nuclear energy facilities that can be claimed up to 20 years. The value of the credit gradually decreases every year after year 10.
  • Allows utilities to recover certain pre-certification costs when developing nuclear energy with the Public Service Commission’s (PSC) approval.
  • Adds nuclear energy to Wisconsin’s energy policy as a high-priority option.
  • Authorizes PSC to approve electric tariffs to very large customers, while ensuring that these customers can contract for power without shifting costs onto smaller ratepayers.

“Earlier this session, the Legislature and Governor Evers passed two bipartisan pro-nuclear bills. While these were important bills to start, there is still more work to do. With nuclear technology being one of the cleanest, safest, and most reliable energy options we have, it is time for Wisconsin to lead once again.”

Representative Sortwell is available for comment.
