MADISON, Wis – This week, the federal government shut down after failing to pass a budget by the October 1st deadline.

Representative Udell (D-47th District) released the following statement:

“This is the third time the government has shut down under Trump while he controls both the House and the Senate. Before Trump, this had not happened under a president who controlled both Chambers since 1980.

“There are enough Republican members in Congress to pass a budget reconciliation bill without a single Democratic vote, which would keep the government open. They chose to not do this.

“National Democrats offered their votes in exchange for an ACA tax credit extension, which millions of Americans rely upon to afford healthcare. Republicans no-showed the negotiations. Contrary to their ongoing excuses, undocumented immigrants do not qualify for ACA coverage.

“The Republican Party controls the Presidency, the House, and the Senate. This shutdown is their responsibility and their failure.”
