MADISON, Wis. – Today, the State Assembly passed a series of bills that sought to increase affordable housing for Wisconsinites. In response, Assembly Assistant Democratic Leader Representative Kalan Haywood (D-Milwaukee) released the following statement:
“While these bills slightly move the needle to create more affordable housing, they do not quite meet the moment. Housing is not, and should not be a partisan issue, yet Republican Leadership chose to ignore the bipartisan work that was done earlier this session. Wisconsinites are sick of politics getting in the way of progress, but unfortunately, Republican leadership in the Assembly has let them down again. We missed opportunities to help our middle class take the first steps in creating wealth, to expand tenant rights, and to give our local governments the tools they need to stimulate housing growth in their communities.
“Now more than ever, the people of Wisconsin need our help to lower costs and improve the quality of their lives. This not only means access to affordable housing, but also lower food, child care, and healthcare costs, and creating jobs that pay a livable wage.
“Assembly Democrats remain committed to working through this legislative session on policies to provide and improve these opportunities to the people of Wisconsin.”
