Madison – A bill that removes the personalization fee for license plates issued to families who have lost a family service member in the U.S. Armed Forces cleared a final legislative hurdle Tuesday and will head to the governor’s desk for his signature.
Representative Wichgers released the following statement:
This bill is the result of a father who asked, ‘Haven’t we paid enough?’
His son was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2010 and his question gets repeated every year at renewal when he pays to have his Gold Star license personalized. Today, the State Assembly answered this father’s question – and mine – by passing Assembly Bill 37 and exempting the $15 personalization fee for Gold Star families.
Gold Star license plates are a small memorial reminding families, and any driver on the road, that freedom is not free and sometimes costs families dearly. Gold Star families have seen their loved one pay the ultimate price for our safety and freedom and this bill recognized that in a small but meaningful way.
I am proud to author this bill, and extend my thanks to Sen. Rob Hutton, for leading it through the Senate.
