Madison, WI – State Representative Rob Swearingen (R-Rhinelander) and State Senator Mary Felzkowski (R-Tomahawk) presented Vilas County Sheriff Joe Fath with the 2025 “First Responder of the Year” award for the 34th Assembly District during a ceremony at the Wisconsin State Capitol.
Sheriff Fath has dedicated more than 44 years of service to the Vilas County Sheriff’s Office, beginning his career as a patrol deputy in 1981 before rising through the ranks as detective sergeant, chief deputy, and ultimately serving as Sheriff since 2013.
Throughout his distinguished career, Sheriff Fath has led with integrity and professionalism, earning the trust of his colleagues and the community alike. His leadership strengthened the Vilas County Sheriff’s Office and set a high standard for those who follow.
“Sheriff Fath embodies the very best of public service,” said Rep. Swearingen. “For more than four decades, he has been a steady hand and a respected leader in our community. It has truly been a pleasure to work with him over the years, and I wish him the very best in his well-deserved retirement. His commitment to the safety and wellbeing of Vilas County residents has set the standard for law enforcement across the Northwoods.”
“Any time we can celebrate those who keep our community safe is a great day, today especially as we honor one of our own, Sheriff Fath,” said Sen. Felzkowski. “Sheriff Fath’s unwavering dedication to the Vilas County community will not soon be forgotten.”
The “First Responder of the Year” award was established in 2019 to recognize Wisconsin’s firefighters, police officers, sheriff’s deputies, and EMS personnel who demonstrate exceptional service and selflessness. Each state representative selects one honoree from their district based on community nominations, highlighting those who go above and beyond in their duties.
Sheriff Fath was nominated by citizens of the 34th Assembly District for his long-standing dedication and contributions to public safety. He has announced his intention to retire on December 1, 2025, leaving behind a lasting legacy of service, leadership, and community trust.
