Madison, WI – Rep. Treig E. Pronschinske released the following statement succeeding the honoring of Josh Matchey and all first responders during the 107th Regular Session:
“Each year, the Wisconsin State Legislature recognizes the bravery and service of emergency personnel through “First Responder of the Year” Day. This year, Deputy Josh Matchey was honored as the recipient from the 29th Assembly District for his heroic and humble actions. His commitment to saving lives and serving his community with courage and compassion embodies the spirit of this award and stands as an inspiration to others across Wisconsin.
“In August 2025, a life-threatening emergency occurred in the City of Durand when Val Hayden was found unresponsive, without a pulse, and not breathing. Acting swiftly, Deputy Josh Matchey began CPR and delivered three life-saving shocks using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), successfully resuscitating Val and giving them a second chance at life. Just months earlier, on March 10, Deputy Matchey displayed the same quick thinking and composure in Pepin County when responding to a man suffering from a heart attack. Without hesitation, he transported the individual in his squad car to ensure immediate medical care—an act that ultimately saved the man’s life. For his heroic and humble actions, Deputy Matchey was honored by the Wisconsin State Legislature as the “First Responder of the Year” for the 29th Assembly District, recognizing his courage, professionalism, and deep commitment to protecting his community.
“First responders like Deputy Josh Matchey embody the very best of public service—individuals who run toward danger and distress when others cannot. Their ability to stay calm under pressure, make life-or-death decisions in seconds, and act with compassion and integrity makes an immeasurable difference in our communities. The courage and dedication shown by people like Deputy Matchey remind us that true heroism often happens quietly, through acts of service, sacrifice, and care for others when it matters most. Deputy Matchey is incredibly deserving of this award.”
