MADISON – State Representative Dean Kaufert (R-Neenah) proudly announced that Neenah Police
Department Officer Joseph Benoit has been selected as the 2025 “First Responder of the Year” for the 53rd
Assembly District. Although Officer Benoit was unable to attend the Assembly floor session today, his
contributions were honored alongside other recipients from across the state in a public ceremony.

“Officer Benoit is the kind of public servant every community hopes for,” said Rep. Kaufert. “He stands
tall in defense of his hometown, and his dedication goes far beyond the call of duty. Whether mentoring
young people or supporting fellow officers, he leads with heart, humility, and a deep sense of justice.”

Officer Benoit has served in law enforcement for over 19 years, including time with the Omro Police
Department before joining the Neenah Police Department in January 2020. From the start, his colleagues
recognized his tireless work ethic and his unique ability to connect with members of the community. In
2023, he was appointed as the department’s Community Policing Coordinator—a role in which he has
thrived, building bridges between law enforcement and the people they serve.

“Joseph was born to serve—he’s a helper, a mentor, and a hero in the eyes of many,” Rep. Kaufert added.
“He’s not just in the right seat on the right bus—he’s driving it forward with purpose and compassion.”

Rep. Kaufert will present Officer Benoit with his legislative citation in person at a local ceremony in
Neenah later this fall.

The First Responder of the Year award, established in 2019, shines a spotlight on the everyday heroes who
serve in Wisconsin’s emergency services. Each year, state legislators invite their communities to nominate
individuals who go above and beyond in their roles—those who demonstrate exceptional service, integrity,
and a deep commitment to public safety. Honorees represent a wide range of disciplines, including police
officers, K9 handlers, sheriff’s deputies, firefighters, paramedics, and EMTs, reflecting the diverse and vital
roles that first responders play across the state.

Along with providing each award recipient with a legislative citation recognizing their achievement, the
state Assembly also passed a resolution declaring October 14th as First Responders Appreciation Day.
