Madison, Wis. — Today, the Wisconsin State Assembly held its biannual ceremony recognizing First Responders from across the state for their outstanding service and acts of heroism. Representative Ann Roe (D-Janesville) was proud to honor Firefighter/Paramedic Nicholas (Nico) Autenrieth of the Janesville Fire Department as the 2025 First Responder of the Year for the 44th Assembly District.

Rep. Roe stated, “Assembly District 44 is especially fortunate to have firefighter/paramedic Nico Autenrieth’s service. His energy, service, and in this case – his fast-thinking response, saved a person’s life. Thank you for your selfless dedication. And thank you to your family for supporting you.”

Earlier this year, on July 14, 2025, members of the Janesville Fire Department were conducting Swiftwater Rescue Training with new recruits on the Rock River when they noticed a person in distress floating downstream and unresponsive to verbal commands.

Without hesitation, Autenrieth sprang into action—entering the water, wading roughly 20 yards, and then swimming toward the individual to successfully reach and secure them. Thanks to his quick response and training, JFD personnel guided both Autenrieth and the rescued individual safely back to shore.

In his nomination, Janesville Fire Chief Ryan Murphy praised Autenrieth’s courage and professionalism, stating:

“Autenrieth’s professionalism and commitment to duty exemplify the highest standards of the Janesville Fire Department.”

Representative Roe added “Nico Autenrieth’s actions reflect not only personal bravery, but also the deep dedication shared by all first responders who put their lives on the line to protect their communities.”
