Trump’s Government Shutdown is Delaying Wisconsinites’ FoodShare Benefits
Cudahy, Wis. — Today, Rep. Christine Sinicki and Sen. Chris Larson, in partnership with Rep. Karen Kirsch, Rep. Ryan Clancy, Rep. Margaret Arney, and Project Concern in Cudahy, hosted an emergency food drive and press conference in response to the announcement that Trump’s government shutdown will delay Wisconsin families’ November FoodShare assistance. Nearly 700,000 people in the state rely on FoodShare assistance, including more than 260,000 kids under 18, to put food on the table.
Rep. Sinicki released the following statement after the emergency food drive and press conference:
“With the government shutdown still dragging on, too many Wisconsin families who count on FoodShare are now wondering how they’ll put food on the table next month. It’s an awful position for anyone to be in, and it shouldn’t take a political fight in Washington to decide whether people can eat.
Here in Cudahy, the Milwaukee area, and communities all across our state, folks aren’t waiting around; they’re coming together to help their neighbors. We’re collecting donations, supporting local food banks, and doing what Wisconsin does best: looking out for one another.
I’m grateful to everyone pitching in, from volunteers to local leaders and advocates who know that when times get tough, we show up for each other. While Republicans in Congress keep the government shut down, Democrats are focused on something simple but powerful: helping people.”
Sen. Chris Larson released the following statement:
“The President and his allies in Congress have created one crisis – the indefinite delay of SNAP benefits during the ongoing government shutdown – because they refuse to address another – the skyrocketing cost of healthcare.
As one man’s ego forestalls progress on either front, our neighbors are stepping in to help. I am extremely grateful for all those who have come through today to donate food to this great organization. Community food banks were struggling to keep up with demand before this manufactured crisis – it’s even more vital that they have our support during this critical moment.”
