Grant County, WI — Lisa White, candidate for Wisconsin State Senate District 17, today announced the launch of Snap Back, a grassroots food drive created in response to the growing need for food assistance among families who are not receiving their SNAP (FoodShare) benefits this month.
With rising food insecurity across rural Wisconsin and federal benefits delayed, Lisa’s campaign is partnering with local businesses across the district to place donation boxes and collect non-perishable food items. The goal is to ensure no family in southwest Wisconsin goes without — and to push lawmakers in Madison and Washington to act.
“Rural Wisconsin should never have to wonder whether there’ll be food on the table,” said Lisa White. “When families in our district lose access to benefits, we step up for our neighbors — but we also demand real solutions from our leaders. Food security shouldn’t depend on politics or shutdowns.”
Why “Snap Back” Is Needed Now
- Wisconsin’s FoodShare program, which supports nearly 700,000 residents — including children, seniors, and veterans — is facing disruptions as federal SNAP funding stalls.
- Governor Tony Evers has declared a state of emergency as thousands risk losing benefits this month.
- The program costs roughly $114 million per month to operate statewide, but gaps in federal funding threaten service continuity.
- Rural communities like those in District 17 are hit hardest, where food access is already limited by fewer stores, longer travel distances, and higher costs.
What Wisconsin Lawmakers Can Do
Lisa White is urging the legislature to take action now by:
- Passing emergency backfill funding to cover SNAP/FoodShare benefits during federal
inaction. - Establishing a state emergency assistance fund for rural and low-income communities.
- Ensuring that rural food distribution and transportation networks receive targeted
support to reach isolated areas. - Protecting funding for food banks, community action agencies, and nutrition programs
that serve small towns and senior populations.
“While we collect food, we also need our lawmakers to step up,” said White. “People can’t
eat excuses. Wisconsin has the means to protect its families — it’s just a matter of will.”
Community Call to Action
Lisa White invites everyone across Senate District 17 to help the cause by:
- Donating non-perishable food items at local “Snap Back” collection boxes.
- Volunteering to collect, sort, and deliver donations to local food pantries.
- Contacting your elected officials and urging them to pass legislation to protect FoodShare
and create emergency support programs. - Spreading awareness by sharing posts and photos using the hashtag #SnapBackWI.
“This campaign isn’t just about politics — it’s about people,” said White. “We’re helping
families fill their cupboards today, and we’re fighting to make sure they never face this
situation again.”
