Madison, WI – Today, two bills authored by Representative Cindi Duchow (R-Delafield) were recommended for passage by the Assembly Committee on Education.

Assembly Bill 51 would require the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) to adhere to the state’s open records and public meetings laws. The law was inspired by numerous stories from concerned parents and coaches about the lack of transparency regarding critical decisions from the state’s premier athletic association. The WIAA governs almost every high school athletic competition in Wisconsin, yet have been difficult to work with for student athletes and coaches subject to their authority. If it becomes law, AB 51 will ensure transparency for student athletes and athletic departments across the state. The Senate companion bill, Senate Bill 16, passed out of the Senate Committee on Education earlier this week with bi-partisan support. Both bills await scheduling for a floor vote in their respective houses.

Assembly Bill 460 extends the “once in always in” school choice provision to include siblings and other dependents. Under current law, once a child enrolls in a school choice voucher program, they cannot be removed because their family later exceeded income limits. AB 460 extends this protection to include siblings and other dependents, allowing families to stay together. Parents already have enough to juggle, this common-sense bill cuts through red tape and lets parents focus on supporting their children’s education. AB 460 awaits a floor vote in the Assembly. The companion bill, Senate Bill 452, has yet to receive a public hearing in the Senate Committee on Education.
