MADISON, WI – Today, the Wisconsin State Senate passed five pieces of legislation authored by State Representative William Penterman (R-Hustisford). These proposals strengthen public safety, keep kids safe, and cut red tape for all Wisconsinites.
Assembly Bill 89 — Fights retail theft sprees by allowing prosecutors to aggregate the value of stolen property or merchandise from multiple thefts within a course of conduct so penalties reflect the total amount of the entire value taken.
Senate Bill 394 — Protects historic property by expanding graffiti penalties to include damage or defacement of a publicly-owned or maintained monument, statue, plaque, or structure of historical or commemorative significance which ensures we can protect these irreplaceable markers of our shared history for future generations.
Assembly Bill 450 — Reduces regulatory costs by delaying the new commercial building code until April 1, 2026, correcting confusion caused by the WI Department of Safety and Professional Services’s unexpected date change and ensuring that any project with plans submitted before that date are exempt.
Senate Bill 392— Strengthens driver education and student safety by requiring all new drivers to receive instruction on school bus safety, student crossings, bus lights, and when motorists must stop for a stopped bus.
Senate Bill 391— Keeps kids safe by allowing school districts to equip school buses with audio recording devices in addition to video.
“These five bills address practical issues that Wisconsin communities face by tackling organized theft, protecting our landmarks, keeping students safe, and cutting red tape,” said Rep. Penterman. “I look forward to seeing these bills continue to advance through the legislative process.”
