RAYMOND, Wis. – Mitchell Berman, Democratic candidate for Congress in WI-01, issued the following statement about the Department of Education’s decision to remove nursing as a professional degree.

“The decision to strip nursing of its professional designation is misguided and dangerous. At a time when advanced practice nurses are stepping up to fill critical gaps in healthcare this move undermines the very workforce that is holding our healthcare system together,” Berman said.

Berman condemned the Department of Education’s decision stating: “As a union board-certified emergency nurse, I strongly condemn this action. This latest attack on healthcare by this  administration could make it more difficult for Wisconsinites to receive care – and Congressman Bryan Steil will do nothing to stop it. After drastic cuts to Medicaid and skyrocketing insurance premiums, it’s all the more important for the Department of Education to reverse this decision immediately and reaffirm nursing as the respected, professional discipline it has always been.”

Mitchell Berman is an emergency room nurse, union member, and first generation college student. He has worked in healthcare for more than 20 years and has spent the last decade caring for our veterans and their families as a nurse at the VA. He’s challenging current Republican incumbent Bryan Steil, a career politician and former corporate lawyer.
