This morning in Wauwatosa, Lieutenant Governor Mandela Barnes held his first stop on his “Wisconsin Way” tour at Little Village Play Cafe where he met with local mothers and families discussing how to make life more affordable and why he’s running for Governor.
During a conversation with the media, Lt. Governor Barnes also called out Wisconsin’s unfair congressional maps.
As Donald Trump and Republicans across the country try to rig the midterm elections to stay in power, Lt. Governor Barnes believes it is time to fight back here in Wisconsin.
Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel: Mandela Barnes signals support for redrawing Wisconsin congressional maps

- Democratic candidate for governor Mandela Barnes is signaling support for redrawing congressional boundaries in Wisconsin, an effort that could result in more Democratic-leaning districts.
- Barnes made his comments at a campaign stop at an indoor playground cafe in Wauwatosa, a day after launching a campaign for governor.
- “Well, Wisconsin’s congressional delegation is six to two. Wisconsin is effectively a 50-50 state,” Barnes said when asked whether Wisconsin officials should redraw the state’s congressional districts.
- “There is a political imbalance, and that political imbalance has been brought to us by Republicans in the Legislature that would rather further the interest of their political party than respond to the needs of people across the state.”
- President Donald Trump earlier this year pushed Republican-leaning states to redraw their congressional maps in order to add GOP-held seats in the U.S. House. The effort prompted some Democratic-leaning states to embark on their own efforts to add blue seats.
- In Wisconsin, the matter is before the state Supreme Court, which is controlled by liberal justices 4-3. The plaintiffs in a lawsuit seeking to overturn the state’s congressional maps are asking a three-judge panel appointed by the court to hold a hearing later this month.
