“Senate Bill 424 was a common-sense step to increasing the number, and the breadth and the depth of new teachers in Wisconsin. Rather than address the teaching shortage, Governor Evers vetoed the bill, and continues to have no ideas on how to solve the shortage.

“This bill was entirely permissive. It didn’t mandate that summer teaching be counted as student teaching. It allowed the State Superintendent to approve a summer teaching program as student teaching. It didn’t require it. It literally gave power to the Department of Public Instruction.

Students and teachers testified that summer teaching was more rigorous and enriching than a traditional semester because it was condensed, also. It gives teachers more ability to be successful, which in turns helps their students learn.

“Earlier this year, Evers vetoed the state school standards he created because he said it took power away from DPI. Now, he vetoes giving more power to DPI to allow our teachers more effective.

“Which is it, Governor? Or do you just think you know better?”
