MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is conducting an investigation into an officer involved shooting that occurred in the City of Superior, Wis. on the morning of Sunday, Dec. 7.

On the morning of Sunday, Dec. 7, officers with the City of Superior Police Department were dispatched to respond to a potential domestic dispute. At approximately 2:44 a.m., an officer with the Superior Police Department initiated a traffic stop near the intersection of Tower Ave. and North 37th Street in the City of Superior on a vehicle believed to be affiliated with the domestic dispute.

The driver exited the vehicle and discharged a firearm, striking the officer. During the course of the interaction, the officer that had initiated the traffic stop and another responding Superior Police Department officer in the vicinity discharged their firearms, striking the subject. 

Aid was immediately rendered to the officer who had initiated the traffic stop. The officer was transported to a local hospital and later released.

No other law enforcement personnel were injured during the incident.

The subject fled the scene by car, crashing the vehicle into a school building. At approximately 7:01 a.m., Superior Police apprehended the subject and were assisted by the Duluth Police Department, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, and St. Louis County, Minnesota Sheriff’s Office.

Aid was rendered to the subject, who was transported to a local hospital and later booked into the Douglas County Jail.

The involved law enforcement officers were each wearing a body camera during the incident and will be placed on administrative leave, per the agency’s policies.

DCI is leading this investigation and is assisted by a DCI Crime Response Specialist and Wisconsin State Patrol. All involved law enforcement are fully cooperating with DCI during this investigation. DCI is continuing to review evidence and determine the facts of this incident and will turn over the investigative reports to the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office when the investigation concludes.
