MADISON, WI — The Transgender Parent and Nonbinary Advocacy Caucus released the following statement in response to the recent decision to no longer provide gender affirming care for minors in the state of Wisconsin:
“Wisconsin values include fairness, compassion and looking out for one another. This decision moves us away from those values by placing additional burdens on families who are already navigating complex medical health needs. Parents should be able to make informed decisions in consultation with qualified health care providers without political interference or fear.
Gender-affirming care for minors is supported by leading medical organizations and is linked to improved mental health outcomes for transgender and nonbinary youth. Removing access to this care increases the risk of anxiety, depression, and suicidally thoughts among young people who already are facing disproportionate mental health challenges. These are real kids, real families and real consequences.”
The Transgender Parent and Nonbinary Advocacy Caucus urges local medical institutions to reconsider their decision and calls on state leaders to stand up for Wisconsin families by protecting access to medically appropriate care, respecting medical expertise, and prioritizing the mental health and well-being of all children no matter where they live.
