Madison…The State Assembly passes Representative Clint Moses’ (R-Menomonie) Assembly Bill 226 to prohibit certain chemicals being served in school meals.
“Currently 1 in 5 U.S. children and adolescents are considered obese,” said Representative Moses. “This bill will help support children by supplying them with nutritious lunch options instead of foods that are known to contain dangerous chemicals. Our kids should be encouraged to eat healthy- this starts at home and what we provide them at school.”
Wisconsin would be joining numerous other states such as California, Virginia, Arizona, and Utah in banning ingredients in school lunches. Other states such as Minnesota, Indiana, and New York are waiting to pass similar legislation. This bill came to light in response to increasing health concerns in our state’s youth. Pre-diabetes among young people has doubled in the past 20 years, and 77% of young Americans are ineligible for military service due to obesity and mental health issues according to the Department of Defense.
“Assembly Bill 226 is a step to helping Wisconsinites eat healthier, and ultimately live healthier,” said Rep. Moses. “This bill, along with others I have authored are a good start to a healthier future.”
Representative Moses looks forward to seeing the bill pass the Senate and reach the Governor’s desk.
