MADISON, WI – Last week, Senator Brad Pfaff (D – Onalaska) sent a letter to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins and Attorney General Pam Bondi calling for stronger antitrust enforcement to combat consolidation in the agricultural and livestock industries that is hurting Wisconsin farmers.
Senator Pfaff’s letter highlights how extreme market concentration among meatpackers, seed and input suppliers, and farm equipment manufacturers is driving up costs for producers while lowering the prices farmers receive for their products. He urges the USDA and DOJ to investigate consolidation in the meatpacking industry, enforce the Packers and Stockyards Act, and strengthen partnerships with state attorneys general to promote fair competition across the agriculture sector.
Senator Pfaff included the following statement: “In the midst of the economic uncertainty caused by tariffs and high prices at the grocery store, we must look for domestic solutions to support our livestock farmers and the agricultural industry as a whole. This should include addressing consolidation and monopolies in the agricultural industry.”
