Madison…Representative Clint Moses (R-Menomonie) voted for Assembly Bill 554 on the Assembly Floor earlier today. This legislation would require any lab-grown meat to be labeled as such before it is sold in Wisconsin

“This bill is simply about transparency within our food industry. ” said Representative Moses.
“Consumers have the right to know whether their meat is coming from a farm or a petri dish.”

Assembly Bill 554 requires any meat product developed through the culturing or reproduction of animal proteins or tissues outside a living animal’s body be labeled explicitly as “Lab-Grown Meat.” This labeling requirement will also apply to packaging in retail stores, restaurant menus, and promotional materials.

“It is essential that the distinction, particularly in terms of nutritional content, between these two types of meat is transparent and easily understandable to the consumer,” said Rep. Moses. “We require truth-in-labeling for other products such as grass-fed or free range, transparency should be expanded so consumers know exactly what they’re buying.”

Representative Moses is optimistic this legislation will receive a Senate hearing in the near future and reach the Governor’s desk prior to the end of session.
