MADISON – Today, the State Assembly passed a bill (Assembly Bill 840) which restricts the use of clean energy in powering data centers and fails to protect ratepayers from being forced to cover the costs of the infrastructure required to power them. Representative Lisa Subeck released the following statement:

“While Wisconsin families struggle more and more each day to afford their utility bills due to the reckless actions of the Trump administration, Republicans here in the legislature are so desperate to shift the blame that within the span of a week they rushed through a bill so lazily written and unworkable that it wouldn’t even solve the problems it claims to.

Meanwhile, Democrats spent months working with experts and stakeholders to craft a plan that would protect Wisconsin jobs, ratepayers, and natural resources. We approached the authors in good faith to find a solution that meets this moment, but they rejected our efforts, choosing instead to play politics.

This bill is pathetic and shameful. It does not protect ratepayers; it threatens jobs; it actively harms our environment. As always, Democrats are ready and willing to work across the aisle to find real solutions for Wisconsin families, and our invitation to work together remains open.”

Rep. Subeck represents the 79th Assembly District and serves as Chair of the Assembly Democratic Caucus. Rep. Subeck also serves as the ranking Democratic member on the Assembly Committee on Energy and Utilities.
