MADISON, Wis. – Representative Kalan Haywood (D-Milwaukee) released the following statement in response to the recent brutality and killings of law-abiding citizens by federal agents in Minneapolis:
“Donald Trump and the Department of Homeland Security remain completely unchecked in their blatant abuse of power and disregard for Constitutional rights. The longer these operations go on, the less safe, and the less free we all are.
“The American people deserve transparency and justice. While everyday costs continue to skyrocket, and hard-working Americans can barely make ends meet, this administration is purely focused on maintaining ICE’s ballooning budget. Our tax dollars are literally being used to assault and murder our friends and neighbors. These untrained agents, illegally given immunity and impunity by this administration cannot be allowed continue, and must be held accountable for their horrific actions.
“I fear these brutal tactics, and legal overreach will continue to spread and infect our cities. We must have a thorough, independent investigation of ICE’s operation, free from Donald Trump or DHS’s influence. Our country was built on principles of freedom, equality and the rule of law, and those principles are being suffocated by a power hungry regime with no regard for Democracy or the Constitution.
“This government sponsored terrorism must stop and it must stop now. I stand with the brave people of Minnesota who continue to resist this tyranny. They exemplify the best in all of us and inspire all who face these injustices. This is the moment we Americans must rise to in order to protect and preserve our Democracy which has endured for nearly 250 years.”
